Fat burners, detox teas and weight-loss claims: what holds up and what the law says

The supplement that reliably causes weight loss is the one that makes you eat less. Most of the aisle is selling the feeling of doing something.

A weighing scale and a measuring tape

Weight loss is the most profitable promise in the supplement market because the failure rate of dieting is high and the desire to try something else is renewable. It is also the category with the weakest evidence and the most aggressive advertising.

The usual ingredients, assessed

IngredientClaimedWhat the evidence supports
Green tea extractFat oxidationVery small effects at high doses; liver injury reported in rare cases
Garcinia cambogiaBlocks fat storageTrials show little to no meaningful weight loss
CLABody compositionSmall, inconsistent effects; gastrointestinal side effects common
CaffeineMetabolism, appetiteReal but modest; tolerance develops
L-carnitineFat transportLittle effect on weight in people who are not deficient
Apple cider vinegarAppetite, blood sugarSmall effects at best; can erode enamel
Detox teasCleansingUsually a laxative or a diuretic. Water weight is not fat
Nothing in this list produces the kind of change the packaging depicts. The best of them are rounding errors next to a change in eating.

Adulteration is a documented problem in this specific category worldwide - weight-loss products found to contain undeclared pharmaceutical drugs, including banned appetite suppressants. A product that works suspiciously well is the one to be most suspicious of.

What the rules say

Under the FSSAI 2016 nutraceuticals regulations, supplements may not claim to treat, cure or prevent disease and must state that they are not for medicinal use. Advertising is additionally constrained by the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 - which specifically covers advertisements suggesting miraculous cures - and by the Advertising Standards Council of India code, which requires substantiation and has repeatedly upheld complaints against weight-loss claims.

So the language shifts: supports metabolism, aids fat management, helps you feel lighter. None of those are claims that can be tested against an outcome, which is why they are used.

What actually moves the number

  • A calorie deficit you can sustain for months rather than weeks.
  • Protein at the upper end of your range, which preserves muscle and reduces hunger.
  • Fibre from vegetables, pulses and whole grains - volume and satiety per calorie.
  • Sleep. Short sleep raises appetite and undermines adherence more effectively than any supplement helps it.
  • Resistance training, which decides how much of the loss is fat rather than muscle.
  • Reducing liquid calories, the single easiest large reduction available to most people.
  • A plan you would still be following in six months, which rules out most of what is sold as a plan.

Where medical help is the right answer

Obesity is a medical condition with medical treatments, and the landscape has changed substantially in recent years. Prescription medicines exist, they work, they have side effects and costs, and they require monitoring. That is a conversation with a doctor - not a purchase from a pharmacy counter or an online seller.

Some causes of weight gain are also specifically treatable: thyroid disease, PCOS, certain medications, and depression among them. If weight has changed rapidly or resists a genuine, sustained effort, a check-up is a more rational next step than another tub.

The uncomfortable summary: if any supplement in this category worked as advertised, it would not need to be advertised that way. The money is better spent on food you will actually eat and on training you will actually do.
